The name Kushmanda is derived from three words: "ku" meaning small, "ushma" meaning warmth, and "anda" meaning cosmic egg. According to Hindu mythology, a single glimpse of Goddess Kushmanda's smile created the entire universe. She is also known as Ashtabhuja Devi because she has eight hands.
She rides a lion and holds a kamandalu, a bow, a bada, and a lotus in her right hands, while her left hands hold a kalasha, a rosary, a mace, and a chakra. Goddess Kushmanda is worshipped with red flowers and blesses her devotees with wealth, health, and power.
This temple of Maa Kushmanda Devi is located in the Ghatampur area of Kanpur district in Uttar Pradesh. The temple is situated in the Ghatampur area between Sagar and Kanpur.

There is no definitive information available about the age of this idol of Maa Kushmanda. Several folk tales are prevalent regarding this temple. According to one story, when Lord Shiva was traveling with the body of Maa Sati, Lord Vishnu cut her body into several pieces with his Sudarshan Chakra. Shaktipeeths were established wherever these body parts fell. It is believed that one of Maa Sati's body parts fell at this very spot, which is why this place became famous as a Shaktipeeth.
