New Delhi: The National Testing Agency (NTA) has officially cancelled the NEET UG 2026 examination that was conducted across the country on May 3, 2026. The announcement was made through an official statement posted on the agency’s X account on May 12, 2026.
According to the statement, the decision was taken with the approval of the Government of India after detailed inputs were examined in coordination with central agencies and law enforcement authorities. The agency stated that the current examination process “could not be allowed to stand,” indicating serious concerns related to the conduct of the exam.
The move has created anxiety and uncertainty among lakhs of medical aspirants and their families, as NEET UG is one of India’s largest entrance examinations for admission into MBBS, BDS and other medical courses.
NTA clarified that the re-examination schedule will be announced separately in the coming days. Along with the fresh exam dates, the revised admit-card release schedule will also be shared through official communication channels.
The agency urged students and parents not to believe rumours or unverified reports circulating on social media platforms. Candidates have been advised to check only official notifications for accurate updates regarding the re-exam process.
Officials said all necessary arrangements are being made to ensure a transparent and secure examination process during the next attempt.
In its statement, NTA revealed that the matter had already been referred to central agencies on May 8, 2026, for independent verification and further action. The agency stressed that maintaining “fair, secure, and credible conduct” of national-level examinations remains its top priority.
Though the statement did not directly mention the exact nature of the irregularities, sources linked the decision to investigative findings shared by law enforcement authorities. The cancellation has once again intensified debate over exam security and paper leak prevention in competitive examinations.
