New Delhi: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday embarked on a crucial nine-day official visit to Canada and the United States, with trade negotiations, investment opportunities, global financial cooperation and G20 discussions at the centre of her agenda.

The high-level economic outreach comes as India continues efforts to strengthen its position in the global economy, attract foreign capital and expand strategic partnerships in key sectors including artificial intelligence, energy, technology, critical minerals and financial services.

During her visit from August 25 to September 2, Sitharaman will travel to Toronto, Chicago, Asheville and New York, engaging with government representatives, investors, business leaders and global financial institutions.

India-Canada Economic Dialogue in Focus

The first phase of Nirmala Sitharaman’s visit will take place in Toronto, where she will participate in the inaugural India-Canada Economic and Financial Dialogue with Canadian Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne. The dialogue is expected to focus on strengthening bilateral economic cooperation, improving financial sector collaboration and exploring new investment opportunities between the two countries.

Key areas of discussion are likely to include global economic trends, resilient supply chains, energy security, artificial intelligence, critical minerals and technology-driven growth. The meeting gains importance as India and Canada continue discussions on expanding trade relations through a proposed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), which aims to create a broader framework for business, investment and market access between the two nations.

Sitharaman’s Investment Push in Canada

A major focus of the Canada leg of the visit will be attracting greater investment into India. Sitharaman is scheduled to participate in investment roundtables with senior executives, CEOs and representatives from major companies to highlight India’s economic growth opportunities and investor-friendly policies.

The Finance Minister will showcase opportunities across sectors such as manufacturing, infrastructure, financial services, technology and innovation. She will also hold discussions with senior officials of Indian public sector banks regarding financial sector cooperation and investment possibilities connected with Gujarat International Finance Tec-City International Financial Services Centre (GIFT City-IFSC).

The visit will also include interactions with members of the Indian diaspora and business organisations to strengthen economic and people-to-people ties.

US Visit to Focus on Trade, Capital and Innovation

After completing her Canada engagements, Sitharaman will travel to the United States, covering Chicago, Asheville and New York. In Chicago, the Finance Minister will participate in investor meetings and business roundtables involving leading corporate representatives and financial stakeholders.

The discussions will focus on India’s economic outlook, investment opportunities and ways to further expand India-US commercial partnerships. Sitharaman will also visit the Polsky Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the University of Chicago, where discussions will focus on startups, technology development, innovation ecosystems and strengthening connections between Indian entrepreneurs and global markets.

G20 Finance Ministers Meet

One of the most significant highlights of Sitharaman’s US visit will be her participation in the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meeting in Asheville, North Carolina. The meeting, scheduled from August 31 to September 1 under the US G20 Presidency, will bring together finance ministers, central bank governors and senior economic officials from the world’s leading economies.

The discussions are expected to focus on global economic stability, inflation management, financial resilience, sustainable development and international cooperation. Leading the Indian delegation, Sitharaman will present India’s perspective on major global financial challenges and policy priorities. The G20 platform will provide India an opportunity to strengthen its role in shaping discussions on the future of the global economy.

India-US Trade Deal Talks Remain Key Focus

The Finance Minister’s visit comes at a time when India and the United States are working to deepen economic ties and advance discussions on a proposed trade agreement. Officials have indicated that major aspects of the trade framework have already been discussed, with remaining issues related mainly to legal and technical details.

A stronger trade partnership between India and the US could open new opportunities in sectors such as technology, defence manufacturing, clean energy, digital economy and advanced manufacturing. The progress of these discussions is being closely watched by businesses and investors in both countries.

New York Visit to Highlight India’s Investment Potential

The final stage of Sitharaman’s tour will take place in New York, where she will hold meetings with investors, corporate leaders and financial sector executives. The discussions will focus on India’s economic growth prospects, investment opportunities and strengthening financial linkages between the two countries.

The Finance Minister will also participate in a ceremonial bell-ringing event at NASDAQ, one of the world’s leading technology-focused stock exchanges. The event is expected to highlight India’s growing connection with global capital markets and its increasing importance in the international investment landscape.

India’s Global Economic Strategy

Nirmala Sitharaman’s nine-day US-Canada mission reflects India’s broader economic diplomacy strategy aimed at expanding global partnerships and attracting long-term investments.

The visit combines bilateral discussions, investor outreach and multilateral engagement, covering areas that are critical for future economic growth. With global economies facing challenges related to supply chains, technology competition and financial uncertainty, India is focusing on stronger partnerships with major economies to secure its economic interests.
