Odisha: Several killed in stone quarry explosion in Dhenkanal; Rescue operation underway

Dhenkanal: At least four workers are feared dead after a powerful explosion in a stone quarry near Gopalpur village in Dhenkanal on late Saturday evening.

However, no officials statement has come up so far by the authorities. Odapada tehsildar and Motanga police have rushed to the site. The investigation is going on to determine whether explosive materials used for blasting were still there at the site.

To expedite the rescue operation, teams from the Fire Service, Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF), and a dog squad have been deployed to the site. Several senior officials, including Dhenkanal Collector Ashish Ishwar Patil and Superintendent of Police Abhinav Sonkar, are present at the scene and are monitoring the rescue operation being carried out with the help of machinery.

Fire Officer Statement

Fire Officer Nabaghan Mallik told that two to four people are feared trapped under large boulders. He said that heavy machinery is being used to cut through the rocks and reach those trapped in the debris. Currently, two teams from the fire department and a dog squad are engaged in the relief and rescue efforts.

Former Odisha CM Expressed Concern

Former Odisha Chief Minister and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) president Naveen Patnaik expressed deep concern over the incident. He shared a post in Odia on the social media platform X, expressing his condolences to the families of the deceased and demanding a thorough investigation into the entire matter.

Meanwhile, the Leader of the Opposition in the Odisha Assembly said that the circumstances behind the accident and the safety arrangements for the workers at the mine should be seriously investigated. He appealed to the government to further intensify the rescue operation so that those trapped can be rescued as quickly as possible.
