Following the detention of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, by the United States, the country's Supreme Court has appointed Vice President Delcy Rodríguez as acting president. The Constitutional Court of Venezuela's Supreme Court issued an order on Saturday stating that Delcy Rodríguez will assume the duties of acting president in Maduro's absence. The court clarified that this step is necessary to ensure the functioning of the government, the continuity of the state, and the protection of sovereignty. Delcy Rodríguez was born on May 18, 1969, in Caracas, the capital of Venezuela. She is the daughter of leftist leader and former guerrilla Jorge Antonio Rodríguez. Together with her brother, Jorge Rodríguez, she has long played a key role in shaping key government policies. Delcy Rodríguez is considered one of Maduro's most trusted aides.
Delcy Rodríguez has held several important positions in her political career. She served as Minister of Communications and Information from 2013–14, and as Foreign Minister from 2014 to 2017. In 2017, she was appointed head of the Constituent Assembly. In June 2018, she became Vice President of the country, and in August 2024, she was given the additional responsibility of the Oil Ministry, where she attempted to manage the energy sector amid US sanctions.
