New Delhi: A major controversy erupted in Jammu and Kashmir on the occasion of Eid. Eid prayers were not permitted at Srinagar's historic Jamia Masjid, a move that sparked widespread resentment among the people. However, in other areas, prayers were offered peacefully amidst tight security arrangements, reports Dynamite News correspondent.

Controversy Over the Closure of Jamia Masjid

The Anjuman Auqaf—the body responsible for the upkeep of Jamia Masjid—alleged that the administration had imposed a ban on Eid prayers. They stated that this decision hurts religious sentiments and violates the people's fundamental right to practice their religion.

Allegations of Placing the Mirwaiz Under House Arrest

Kashmir's prominent religious cleric, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq—who typically leads the prayers at Jamia Masjid—was also allegedly placed under house arrest. He remarked that, for several years now, permission to offer Eid prayers at the mosque has been denied—a situation he described as deeply regrettable.

Omar Abdullah's Reaction

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also questioned this decision. He asked, "If the administration itself claims that the situation is normal, then why was permission for prayers at Jamia Masjid denied?" He expressed hope that, in the future, people would be granted permission to offer prayers openly.

Controversy Regarding Prayers at Hazratbal

On the other hand, while Eid prayers were indeed held at the Hazratbal Shrine, a controversy arose over the omission of special prayers for Iran, Palestine, and Lebanon. PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti expressed her displeasure over this matter, stating that prayers should have been offered for all Muslim nations currently facing difficulties.

Escalating Political Reactions

Political rhetoric surrounding this entire episode has intensified. Opposition leaders have raised questions by framing the issue as a violation of religious freedom, while the administration has cited security concerns as the justification for its actions.

This controversy, emerging on a sacred occasion like Eid, has become a subject of intense debate in Kashmir—resonating across both religious and political spheres. The focus now shifts to what changes, if any, will be seen in such decisions in the future.
