New Delhi: The names of six Indian armed forces personnel who died during Operation Sindoor have been officially included in the Army War Memorial’s records, marking the first public disclosure of their identities.

The list includes five Army personnel — Subedar Major Pawan Kumar, Rifleman Sunil Kumar, Lance Naik Dinesh Kumar, Agniveer Mood Murli Naik and Havildar Sunil Kumar Singh. Indian Air Force Sergeant Surendra Kumar is also among those honoured.

Their names have been added to the 2025 Roll of Honour, which records the personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice during various military operations.

Fallen Heroes To Receive Memorial Recognition

As part of the National War Memorial tradition, the names of the six personnel will be engraved on commemorative bricks at the memorial in New Delhi.

Two of the personnel have also been recognised with gallantry awards for their service. Rifleman Sunil Kumar was awarded the Vir Chakra posthumously, while Sergeant Surendra Kumar received the Vayu Medal.

President Droupadi Murmu presented the Vir Chakra to Rifleman Sunil Kumar’s parents during the Defence Investiture Ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on June 8.

Operation Sindoor And India-Pakistan Tensions

Operation Sindoor was launched following a terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam valley on April 22, 2025, which resulted in the deaths of 26 people.

India carried out strikes targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, with authorities stating that several terrorists were eliminated during the operation.

The military confrontation between India and Pakistan continued for a short period before both sides agreed to halt firing and military actions following communication between the Directors General of Military Operations of the two countries.

The inclusion of the six names in the official honour roll highlights their contribution and sacrifice during one of the most significant security operations of the year.
