New Delhi: Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan turned into a major political battleground on Sunday as Opposition parties under the INDIA bloc mounted a united demonstration against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, escalating their confrontation with the central government and the Election Commission of India over voter-list revision and electoral transparency.

The rally brought together several prominent Opposition leaders, including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee, former Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav also joined the gathering, underlining the Opposition alliance’s attempt to present a collective political front on the SIR issue.

With leaders from the Congress, Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress and other Opposition parties sharing the platform, the rally emerged as another significant show of coordination within the INDIA bloc. The gathering placed electoral-roll revision, voter rights and the Election Commission’s role at the centre of the Opposition’s political campaign.

The event also marked the seventh instance of Opposition unity on the issue within 25 days, according to the details shared by the organisers. The repeated mobilisation indicates that the SIR controversy has become a prominent component of the alliance’s political and electoral agenda.

Opposition leaders march from Minto Road to Ramlila Maidan

The political mobilisation began before the main rally, with senior Opposition leaders assembling at the residence of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge. From there, the leaders proceeded in a convoy towards Ramlila Maidan, passing through Minto Road.

The procession included Rahul Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav and Mamata Banerjee, among other prominent political figures. Their joint appearance was intended to underline the Opposition’s coordinated stand against the SIR exercise and its concerns over the electoral process.

By the time the leaders reached the venue, supporters and party workers from different states had begun gathering at Ramlila Maidan. Congress, Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress and other Opposition cadres participated in the event, turning the historic ground into a focal point of the alliance’s campaign.

The presence of leaders representing different political parties and regions gave the rally a national political dimension, with the Opposition seeking to project its campaign against SIR as a collective issue rather than the concern of any single party.

10 lakh mobilisation target, Delhi Police estimates turnout at 45,000–50,000

The Ramlila Maidan rally was planned as a major demonstration of Opposition strength, with the alliance reportedly setting a target of mobilising around 10 lakh people. Party workers and supporters across different states had been urged to participate, reflecting the scale of mobilisation envisaged by the organisers.

However, estimates of the actual turnout differed sharply from the stated target. While Opposition parties described the gathering as a major show of strength, the Delhi Police estimated that approximately 45,000 to 50,000 people attended the rally.

Supporters were also present in areas surrounding the main venue. The difference between the mobilisation target and the police estimate became a notable aspect of the event, highlighting the contrast between the alliance’s planned scale and the official assessment of attendance.

The rally nevertheless brought together senior leaders and party cadres from multiple states, giving the INDIA bloc another opportunity to demonstrate coordination around its objections to the SIR process.

Ramlila Maidan divided into 14 security zones

Given the possibility of a large gathering and the arrival of political supporters from different parts of the country, Delhi Police put in place extensive security and crowd-management arrangements.

Ramlila Maidan was divided into 14 separate zones to facilitate security deployment, regulate the movement of people and maintain law and order during the programme. Arrangements were also made for entry and exit, while security personnel maintained surveillance across the venue.

The zonal security plan was aimed at managing crowd movement and preventing congestion during the rally. Special monitoring was maintained in view of the participation of supporters from several states and the presence of senior national-level political leaders.

The arrangements formed part of the broader security and event-management measures for the Opposition gathering at one of Delhi’s prominent venues for major political demonstrations.

Seventh show of Opposition unity in 25 days over SIR

The rally was part of a sustained Opposition campaign against the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. According to the information provided about the demonstrations, Opposition parties had come together on the issue seven times within a period of 25 days.

Before the Ramlila Maidan gathering, six demonstrations had taken place between October 6 and October 13. The latest rally therefore marked another phase of the alliance’s continuing mobilisation against the SIR exercise.

The frequency of these protests indicates that Opposition parties have placed voter-list revision high on their political agenda. Their campaign has focused on concerns surrounding the electoral-roll process, the possibility of eligible voters being left out and the need for transparency in the revision exercise.

By repeatedly taking the issue to public platforms, the INDIA bloc has sought to build a broader political narrative around electoral rights and institutional accountability. The Ramlila Maidan gathering extended that campaign through the participation of leaders from several Opposition parties.

Rahul Gandhi, Akhilesh Yadav, Mamata Banerjee and Kharge among key faces

The rally witnessed the participation of several leading figures from the Opposition spectrum. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi represented the Congress leadership, while Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were also present.

Akhilesh Yadav’s participation brought the Samajwadi Party into the alliance’s mobilisation, while Mamata Banerjee represented the Trinamool Congress. Tejashwi Yadav’s presence added another prominent Opposition face from Bihar to the gathering.

The participation of leaders from different political parties was significant for the INDIA bloc, which has been attempting to maintain coordination among its constituent parties on national political issues. Their joint appearance at Ramlila Maidan provided a platform to reiterate the alliance’s opposition to the SIR exercise and raise questions about the electoral process.

SIR becomes a major political flashpoint ahead of electoral battles

The Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls has emerged as a major point of political confrontation between the ruling establishment and Opposition parties. The exercise, which concerns the revision and verification of voter lists, has triggered debate over electoral-roll accuracy, the inclusion of eligible voters and the safeguards available to citizens during the process.

The INDIA bloc has made these concerns a central part of its campaign, arguing that electoral transparency and the protection of voting rights require close scrutiny. The repeated demonstrations, culminating in the Ramlila Maidan rally, reflect the alliance’s decision to sustain political pressure on the issue.

With seven Opposition mobilisations reported within 25 days, the latest gathering represents another test of the INDIA bloc’s ability to maintain a common political position across parties and states. The participation of senior leaders from the Congress, Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress and RJD has reinforced the alliance’s public messaging.

The central question now is whether the Opposition can convert its repeated demonstrations into a sustained campaign that keeps electoral-roll transparency at the forefront of national political debate. The Ramlila Maidan rally has once again placed the SIR controversy and the Election Commission’s role under the political spotlight.
