New Delhi: The President of India has approved the conferment of 131 Padma Awards 2026, recognising exceptional contributions across diverse fields such as art, public affairs, medicine, literature, sports, science, social work, and trade and industry, the Ministry of Home Affairs announced on Saturday
One of the country’s highest civilian honours, the Padma Awards are announced annually on the occasion of Republic Day and are conferred in three categories-Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri.
While Padma Vibhushan is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service, Padma Bhushan recognises distinguished service of a high order, and Padma Shri honours distinguished service in any field.
Padma Awards Explained: How India chooses its most prestigious civilian honours?
For 2026, the list includes 5 Padma Vibhushan, 13 Padma Bhushan, and 113 Padma Shri awardees, including two duo cases, which are counted as one award each. Among the recipients are 19 women, six foreign nationals/NRI/OCI/PIOs, and 16 posthumous awardees, reflecting a wide spectrum of national and global contributions
The highest civilian honour this year will be conferred on five eminent personalities, including veteran leader V S Achuthanandhan and actor Dharmendra Singh Deol, both posthumously. Renowned Carnatic violinist N Rajam, jurist K T Thomas, and scholar P Narayanan also feature in the Padma Vibhushan list
The Padma Bhushan awardees include celebrated playback singer Alka Yagnik, legendary actor Mammootty, former cricketer and sports ambassador Vijay Amritraj, industrialist Uday Kotak, and advertising icon Piyush Pandey (posthumous). Political leaders such as Shibu Soren (posthumous) and Bhagat Singh Koshyari have also been recognised for their public service
The largest share of awards Padma Shri has been given to 113 individuals for grassroots and national-level contributions. These include sportspersons Harmanpreet Kaur Bhullar, Savita Punia, and Rohit Sharma; social workers from remote regions; artists preserving folk and classical traditions; and scientists and doctors advancing research and healthcare.
Notably, several awardees hail from the North-East, tribal communities, and lesser-represented disciplines such as archaeology, animal husbandry, and radio broadcasting.
