Lucknow: Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav has said the ‘A’ in his party’s PDA coalition now also stands for the Agrawal and Agravanshi communities, alleging that BJP workers and their associates mistreated SP candidate Dr Akash Agarwal during the Agra division teachers’ MLC election in Uttar Pradesh.

In a post on X, Yadav said the alleged incident had left members of the Agrahari community feeling “hurt, distressed and humiliated”. Claiming that they felt betrayed and oppressed, he reiterated the SP’s political message: “Those who are oppressed belong to PDA.” He also said the support of Agrawals had strengthened the party’s social base and morale.

Akhilesh Links Agrawals to PDA Coalition

PDA stands for 'Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak'  backward classes, Dalits and minorities. Yadav said the ‘A’ now also represented the Agrawal and Agravanshi communities, linking the alleged mistreatment of Agarwal to the SP’s broader political mobilisation.

“Now that the entire Agrawal community has joined us, we feel that our strength has increased manifold,” Yadav wrote. Describing the group as educationally and professionally influential, he said its support had boosted the party’s confidence.

The SP chief further asserted that the political contest had become a fight between “5% BJP supporters and 95% PDA”, framing the controversy in terms of the party’s wider social coalition.

SP Chief Seeks Action Over Alleged Misconduct

The controversy centres on allegations of misbehaviour and violence involving Agarwal during the Agra division teachers’ legislative council election. Yadav questioned the alleged treatment of the SP candidate and called for intervention by the authorities.

He demanded that the administration issue a certificate of victory to Agarwal and urged the Election Commission to ensure fairness in the electoral process. He also appealed to President Droupadi Murmu and the Supreme Court to take cognisance of the matter.

Yadav referred to videos purportedly showing the incident, claiming they had caused distress. The allegations have not been independently verified, and an official response from the parties concerned was not available in the material provided.

Akhilesh Reaffirms Commitment to Lohia’s Ideals

Yadav also invoked the legacy of socialist leader Ram Manohar Lohia, reaffirming his commitment to the latter’s political ideals.

“Dr Ram Manohar Lohia’s ideals were our guiding light in the past, remain so today, and will continue to guide us in the future,” he said.

The dispute has drawn attention to the Agra teachers’ MLC election, with the focus now on the response of the administration and election authorities to the allegations and the demand for a victory certificate.
