Kuala Lumpur: On Sunday, the second day of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Malaysia, he was formally welcomed at the Perdana Putra Bhavan in Putrajaya, the administrative capital. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim presented him with a guard of honor and extended a warm welcome. This is also Prime Minister Modi's first foreign visit in 2026, a visit both countries are keenly watching.

Emphasis on Cooperation in Bilateral Talks

Following the formal welcome, the Prime Ministers of both countries met with ministers and delegations and held extensive bilateral talks. Addressing the talks, Prime Minister Modi stated that India-Malaysia relations are historic, deep, and based on trust. He noted that cooperation between the two countries has steadily grown in recent years, and this partnership is expanding into new areas. The Prime Minister also expressed gratitude for the warm welcome extended by the Malaysian government and people.

Prime Minister Modi stated that the two countries are rapidly expanding cooperation in cutting-edge sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, clean energy, and semiconductors. Partnerships are also strengthening in the areas of skills development, capacity building, defense, and security. He congratulated Malaysia for its successful chairmanship of ASEAN and expressed confidence that its cooperation will further deepen India-ASEAN relations.

The Prime Minister also underlined that the true strength of the relationship between the two countries lies in people-to-people ties, and that the approximately 3 million Indian-origin citizens living in Malaysia are playing a vital role in strengthening this partnership.

Anwar Ibrahim expressed hope for increased cooperation

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said that India-Malaysia relations are moving in a very positive direction. He stated that teams from both countries are working together on certain issues and that cooperation will strengthen in every area in the future. He also described this visit as personally significant.

Focus on Digital Connectivity

Addressing the Indian community in Kuala Lumpur on the first day of the visit, Prime Minister Modi said that digital cooperation between the two countries is accelerating and that work is underway to soon launch India's digital payment system, UPI, in Malaysia. This initiative is expected to give a new impetus to trade, tourism and people-to-people contact.
