New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will pay an official visit to Malaysia from February 7 to 8 at the invitation of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Tuesday. This will be Modi’s third visit to Malaysia and his first since India and Malaysia elevated their bilateral relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in August 2024.

The visit is expected to provide an opportunity for both sides to take stock of progress in bilateral cooperation and outline future priorities.

Bilateral Talks With Malaysian Leadership

During the visit, Modi will hold bilateral discussions with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. The talks are expected to focus on strengthening cooperation across key sectors, including trade and investment, defence and security, and maritime collaboration.

Officials said the discussions would also cover emerging areas such as digital and financial technology, energy transition, healthcare, education and connectivity, reflecting the expanding scope of India-Malaysia ties.

Engagement With Diaspora and Business Leaders

As part of the visit, Modi is scheduled to interact with members of the Indian community in Malaysia, which numbers around 2.9 million and is the third largest Indian diaspora globally. The diaspora has played a significant role in strengthening people-to-people links between the two countries.

The Prime Minister will also meet industry and business leaders from both sides. The 10th India-Malaysia CEO Forum is scheduled to take place alongside the visit, with a focus on boosting economic engagement and exploring new investment opportunities.

Broad-Based and Growing Partnership

India and Malaysia share long-standing ties rooted in historical, civilisational and cultural connections. In recent years, the relationship has expanded into multiple areas, including defence cooperation, maritime security, education, culture and tourism.

The official visit is expected to allow both leaders to review the full range of bilateral cooperation and set the direction for future engagement aimed at mutual economic growth and regional stability.

The Ministry of External Affairs said the visit underlines the importance India attaches to its partnership with Malaysia in the Indo-Pacific region.
