Yogi government’s mega road repair mission begins ahead of festive season in Uttar Pradesh. (Img: Google)
Lucknow: Ahead of the upcoming festive season, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed officials to accelerate road repair work across the state and ensure that rain-damaged roads are restored for public movement without delay. The move comes amid concerns over potholes, damaged stretches and increasing traffic pressure during major festivals.
During a high-level review meeting of the Public Works Department (PWD) on Friday, the Chief Minister instructed departments to immediately repair roads affected by heavy rainfall and floods, while ensuring permanent renewal work after the monsoon season.
The government’s focus has shifted towards improving road connectivity before major festivals when lakhs of people are expected to travel across Uttar Pradesh.
The Uttar Pradesh government has identified 681 important routes that will be repaired on priority before the festive season. These routes include roads witnessing heavy movement during festivals such as Ganesh Chaturthi, Vishwakarma Puja, Navratri, Diwali, Chhath Puja and Kartik Purnima.
The Chief Minister directed officials to ensure that major roads remain free from potholes and commuters do not face difficulties during increased travel demand. The administration has been asked to continuously monitor road conditions and conduct surveys of newly damaged stretches caused by rainfall.
CM Yogi Adityanath stressed that road repair should not remain limited to temporary patchwork. He directed officials to make damaged roads motorable immediately and undertake permanent renewal work wherever required after the monsoon.
The Chief Minister highlighted that road quality directly impacts the daily lives of citizens, including students, patients, traders and commuters. He instructed departments to prioritise roads near educational institutions, hospitals, major markets, government offices and other locations witnessing heavy public movement.
During the meeting, officials presented details of the ongoing pothole-free campaign covering roads under nine different departments. Around 4.36 lakh kilometres of roads under various departments have been included in the review process.
The government has set a target of making nearly 50,000 kilometres of roads pothole-free, while work on around 5,751 kilometres has already been completed. Officials said damaged routes are being surveyed and department-wise targets will be finalised after assessment.
The review meeting also highlighted that excessive rainfall is not the only reason behind road damage. Officials informed that several roads have suffered damage due to movement of heavy vehicles linked with ongoing construction projects involving expressways, national highways and railway works. The concerned departments are conducting surveys to identify affected roads and prepare repair plans.
Apart from pothole repairs, the government has reviewed long-term road renewal and special repair projects. According to officials, a target of around 30,000 kilometres has been set for road renewal work, while approximately 5,000 kilometres have been identified for special repairs. Progress has been reported on around 14,000 kilometres of renewal work and nearly 700 kilometres of special repair projects.
While directing officials to speed up repairs, CM Yogi also emphasised maintaining quality standards. The Chief Minister instructed departments to ensure that roads are repaired properly and that poor-quality work does not lead to repeated damage. The government’s road improvement campaign comes at a time when public expectations over infrastructure quality and connectivity have increased across Uttar Pradesh.
The Chief Minister also reviewed action plans of multiple departments, including Mandi Parishad, Panchayati Raj, Irrigation, Rural Development, Urban Development, Housing and Urban Planning, and Infrastructure and Industrial Development departments.
He stressed better coordination between departments to avoid delays and ensure effective implementation of road repair projects. Officials from the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways were also asked about their action plan for damaged roads.
With major festivals approaching, road connectivity has become a key administrative challenge for Uttar Pradesh. From village roads to major highways, commuters expect smoother travel during the festive rush.
The government’s latest road repair campaign will now be closely monitored as citizens look for visible improvement on the ground. The biggest challenge for the administration will be completing repairs on time while ensuring long-term durability of roads beyond temporary fixes.
