New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to chair an important meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) at 7 pm on Wednesday in New Delhi. The meeting will focus on reviewing the evolving situation in West Asia and its potential implications for India.

Focus on Energy and Economic Stability

The CCS is expected to assess how ongoing tensions in the region could impact India’s energy security, supply chains and overall macroeconomic stability. With India heavily dependent on imports for energy, developments in West Asia remain a critical concern for policymakers.

Key Ministers to Attend

The meeting will be attended by senior members of the CCS, including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.

In addition, ministers overseeing sectors such as agriculture, commerce, petroleum, power, transport and civil aviation are also expected to participate, indicating a broad-based review.

Follow-Up to Earlier Review

The meet comes days after a similar review held on March 22, where the government assessed the availability of essential commodities, including food, fertilisers, fuel and electricity. Officials also examined preparedness for potential disruptions and discussed contingency measures.

Preparedness Across Sectors

During the earlier meeting, the government reviewed fertiliser availability ahead of the upcoming kharif season and explored alternative import options. Coal stocks at power plants and measures to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply were also discussed.

Efforts to diversify imports in sectors such as chemicals, pharmaceuticals and petrochemicals, along with identifying new export markets, were part of the strategy to mitigate risks.

Rising Global Concerns

The review comes amid escalating tensions in West Asia following recent military developments involving the United States, Israel and Iran. The situation has raised concerns globally over energy supplies, trade routes and inflationary pressures.

Political Reactions

While the government has emphasised preparedness, opposition voices have also raised concerns. Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has warned of possible increases in fuel prices and inflation due to the crisis.
