New Delhi: Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi has launched a sharp attack on the Central government following developments related to the Women’s Reservation Bill in Parliament, claiming that the opposition has “protected democracy” and thwarted an alleged attempt to undermine it.

Priyanka Attacks Modi Govt
She said the Modi government failed to act on the Women’s Reservation legislation for nearly three years and had issued a related notification only recently. “We have consistently supported women’s reservation. The entire Opposition is united in the demand that the original Women’s Reservation Bill be implemented without dilution,” she said.

Priyanka Gandhi also alleged that the government’s approach to the issue reflected an attempt to influence the delimitation process and weaken democratic and federal structures. “The way this matter has been presented, and the intent behind it, is something we cannot support,” she said.

Opposition Success
Describing recent parliamentary developments as a turning point, she added that the Opposition had succeeded in resisting what she called an effort to distort constitutional principles. “Yesterday was a major victory for democracy. Any attempt to weaken democratic institutions has been defeated. This is a win for the Constitution, for the country, and for Opposition unity,” she said.

She further claimed that the outcome reflected the strength of democratic institutions and the collective stand taken by Opposition parties during the debate.

The Public Understands Everything Now
Priyanka Gandhi also took aim at statements made by Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. She asserted that the claim-made during speeches in Parliament-that those who do not support this bill will be unable to win elections is completely baseless.

She stated unequivocally, "The people of this country are no longer the same people they were 12 years ago. People are discerning and are observing everything closely."

The Opposition Safeguarded the Constitution
Speaking to the media within the Parliament complex, Priyanka Gandhi stated that the Opposition has safeguarded the Constitution and thwarted a potential conspiracy linked to the delimitation process.
She reiterated that the Congress party supports women's reservation, but emphasized that the government must demonstrate sincerity regarding this issue. She suggested that the previous Women's Reservation Bill be reintroduced, as it could garner broad consensus.
