New Delhi: Lok Sabha opposition leader and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi expressed serious concern about his security in a special MP/MLA court in Pune on August 13. He told the court that "my life is in danger" and blamed complainant Satyaki Savarkar's family ties and the current political environment for this.
Why is Rahul Gandhi scared?
Rahul Gandhi argued in the court that Satyaki Savarkar has described himself as a descendant of Nathuram Godse (Mahatma Gandhi's assassin), and his family history is associated with "violent ideology." He feared that due to this he could be harmed or implicated in a false case. Therefore, he asked the court to give him "preventive protection" so that not only his life is safe, but also the fairness of the trial is maintained.
What is the whole matter?
This case is related to Rahul Gandhi's speech in London in March 2023, where he made a controversial statement about Veer Savarkar. Satyaki Savarkar (the complainant) claims that Rahul lied and accused Savarkar of beating up a Muslim man, which is not true. A defamation suit is going on over this.
Rahul Gandhi also mentioned political pressure
Rahul told the court that his recent statements, such as "vote thief government," "election rigging," and "a true Hindu is not violent," have caused him to face the wrath of BJP leaders. He also called it a threat to his safety.
Next hearing on September 10
Rahul's lawyer, Milind Pawar, said that Satyaki Savarkar has connections with the Savarkar and Godse families, and he may misuse his influence. The court has adjourned the next hearing of the case to September 10.
What will happen next?
Rahul Gandhi's petition highlights his security concerns. The case is linked to the Savarkar-Godse controversy, which could increase political tension. The court's decision will affect Rahul's security arrangements and the fairness of the trial.
