New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been charged by opposition parties with conspiring with the Election Commission to commit voter fraud. Today on Wednesday the BJP responded by bringing up a 45-year-old accusation against Sonia Gandhi the former President of the Congress.

Anurag Thakur a former Union Minister asserted that Sonia Gandhi's name was on the voter list from 1980 to 1982 even though she was not yet an Indian citizen. On X (formerly Twitter) Amit Malviya the head of the BJP IT Cell posted a sample of the 1980 voter list and denounced it as a grave electoral fraud.

According to the BJP, Sonia Gandhi married Rajiv Gandhi in 1968 after being born in Italy in 1946. According to Malviya her name was illegally added to the voter list for the New Delhi Parliamentary constituency prior to the 1980 Lok Sabha elections in violation of the required citizenship requirement for voter registration.

In 1982 her name was taken off the list after strong opposition. Even after Sonia Gandhi became a citizen in 1983 her name was added to the voter list after the deadline which was against the law according to Congress sources who also called the issue an attempt to deflect attention. To deflect attention from the current election issues the BJP is bringing up a 45-year-old issue Congress sources told a private TV channel.

In recent years opposition parties have also charged the BJP and the Election Commission with manipulating voter lists particularly in Maharashtra, Karnataka and now Bihar.

Current Opposition Accusations

According to opposition parties 80 votes were cast from a single room in Mahadevapura, Karnataka which resulted in more than 102000 votes being cast illegally. Within months of Maharashtras defeat in the Lok Sabha election more than 10 million new names were added to the voter list.

Congress accused a conspiracy to use a special rigorous revision process in Bihar to omit opposition voters from the list. The Supreme Court is currently hearing this case. The Election Commission has denied all accusations claiming that its procedures are impartial and open.
