Hyderabad: As the Election Commission is going to issue the notification tomorrow for the Rajya Sabha biennial elections across the country, Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has already held two rounds of discussions with the party high command in order to finalise the two seats from the state.
According to Dynamite News correspondent, top sources in the party indicated that there is total consensus with regard to repeating eminent lawyer Abhishek Singhvi from Telangana. Singhvi got a Rajya Sabha seat from Telangana for only two years, not the full term of six years. That is why there is near unanimity for a second term. Moreover, at present, Singhvi is the main lawyer for the state government not only in river water disputes but in all civil and constitutional matters as well.
With regard to the second seat, there are six strong aspirants, including former Supreme Court judge B. Sudharshan Reddy, who recently contested for Vice President of India against NDA’s Radhakrishnan on behalf of the Opposition. Other aspirants include the Chief Minister’s advisor V. Narender Reddy, BC leaders Madhu Yashki and V. Hanumantha Rao, State Planning Commission chief Chinna Reddy, and farmers’ leader Kodanda Reddy.
Congress requires about 80 legislators to win both the Rajya Sabha seats in Telangana, but at present it has only 76 MLAs and requires at least four more legislators. The main Opposition BRS has 27 MLAs, while BJP has 8, MIM has 7, CPI has one, and there is one Independent.
With the support of MIM, Congress could easily sail through. BJP is expected to abstain from voting since it does not want to identify either with Congress or BRS. It is not known so far whether BRS will put up its candidate. The election is scheduled for March 16.
