Top news of the day
Russia has taken a major step regarding the internet and social media. According to media reports, major international platforms like WhatsApp, YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook have suddenly stopped working across the country. It is reported that the domain names of these websites have been removed from Russia's national Domain Name System (DNS), preventing users from accessing these services.
Previously, the speed of some foreign platforms was slowed down in Russia, but this time the situation is different. Under the current action, many websites have become completely invisible. When users try to access these sites, the system cannot locate the corresponding IP address and an error message appears on the screen stating that such a domain does not exist. This clearly indicates that this measure is considered more stringent than before.
In a major development in the Kanpur Lamborghini accident case, the accused, Shivam Mishra, has been arrested by the police after allegedly evading authorities for nearly 90 hours.
According to officials, Mishra was taken into custody from his residence near Six Bangaliya Road by a team from the Gwaltoli police station. Despite being in Kanpur since the accident, he had reportedly been avoiding arrest.
Gold and silver prices opened lower on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) on Thursday. Bullion prices were under pressure due to a stronger US dollar in the international market and weakening expectations of an early interest rate cut. Investors are now eyeing upcoming inflation data, which could provide further indications of monetary policy.
Gold for the April contract on MCX opened 0.47% lower at ₹1,58,000 per 10 grams, down from its previous close of ₹1,58,755. During trading, gold reached a low of ₹1,57,701. Later, it was seen trading at ₹1,58,079 per 10 grams, down about ₹676, or 0.43%.
The stock market opened on a weak note today. The Sensex fell over 200 points in the pre-opening session, while the Nifty saw little change. Early indications suggest that investors are cautious, and global cues are having an impact on the market.
Regarding the currency market, the Indian rupee opened strongly. The rupee strengthened by 24 paise against the US dollar to reach 90.46–90.47. This rise in the rupee is believed to be linked to foreign exchange inflows and a weakening dollar.
Team India has made a strong start to its campaign in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026. India defeated the United States by 29 runs in the first match played in Mumbai. The Indian team's next match is against Namibia, but cricket fans are already focused on the high-voltage India-Pakistan clash. Meanwhile, captain Suryakumar Yadav has made an important statement regarding the team's preparation, mindset, and goals.
Voting for the 13th parliamentary election in Bangladesh began this morning. This is the first general election since the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and is therefore considered extremely important. Voters are exercising their franchise amid tight security arrangements across the country. The Election Commission has appealed to citizens to vote fearlessly and to all political parties to maintain peace.
Voting began at 7:30 a.m. local time and will continue until 4:30 p.m. Voting is taking place in 299 of the 300 parliamentary seats, while one seat has been postponed due to the death of a candidate. Vote counting is expected to begin as soon as voting concludes. This time, a referendum on an 84-point reform package is also being held alongside the elections.
The nationwide strike, called by a joint group of central trade unions and several farmers' organizations, is being observed today on Thursday. The strike has been called to protest new labor laws, wage issues, privatization, and other policy decisions. According to Amarjeet Kaur, General Secretary of the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), approximately 300 million workers are expected to join the movement, which could disrupt services in several sectors.
The weather in North India is set to change once again. Rain and snowfall are expected in the western Himalayan regions in the coming days, while temperatures in the plains are forecast to rise sharply. This change in weather is believed to be due to an active western disturbance and a trough in the upper atmosphere. This could increase the cold in the hilly states, while the cold in the plains will weaken.
