India Celebrates 77th Republic Day with Spectacular Parade in Delhi
US President Donald Trump extended warm greetings to India on the occasion of its 77th Republic Day, highlighting the long-standing relationship between the two nations and describing their ties as a “historic bond” rooted in democratic values.
India marked Republic Day on Monday, commemorating the adoption of its Constitution in 1950 a defining moment that laid the foundation for the world’s largest democracy.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Monday underscored India’s growing global role, saying a “successful India” would make the world more “stable, prosperous and secure.” Her remarks came as India and the European Union move closer to finalising a long-pending free trade agreement (FTA) that could reshape global trade dynamics.
Von der Leyen is on a three-day official visit to India and was the chief guest at the country’s 77th Republic Day celebrations, alongside European Council President Antonio Costa.
On the occasion of Republic Day at the world-famous Magh Mela 2026, the banks of the Sangam witnessed a remarkable spectacle of devotion and patriotism. The sands of the Sangam resounded with chants of "Vande Mataram" and "Bharat Mata ki Jai." Sadhus, saints, pilgrims, and devotees celebrated the national festival with reverence and pride by hoisting the flag at various camps with great enthusiasm. The tricolor, fluttering in the spiritual atmosphere, enhanced the divine aura of the fair area.
With Republic Day being celebrated across India on January 26, investors are seeking clarity on whether stock market trading is operational today. National holidays often lead to changes in trading schedules, impacting market participation, liquidity and settlement timelines.
As per the official holiday calendar of Indian exchanges, trading activity has been suspended today across major financial markets. The National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the BSE are closed on January 26 in observance of Republic Day. Trading has been halted across all segments, including equities, equity derivatives, currency derivatives and interest rate derivatives.
