Delhi govt to start Atal Canteens from Dec 25
New Delhi: The Delhi government is set to roll out its Atal Canteen scheme on December 25, aiming to provide over 1 lakh subsidized meals daily at just Rs 5 each. The initiative is part of the city’s plan to ensure affordable meals for economically weaker sections.
A total budget of Rs 118.8 crore has been allocated for the project. The meals will be served in two shifts lunch from 11:30 am to 2 pm and dinner from 6:30 pm to 9 pm across 100 canteens located throughout Delhi. Each canteen is expected to cater to around 1,000 people per day.

To maintain transparency, a biometric and token-based system will be implemented for meal distribution. As per the officials, each thali will be priced at Rs 5, while the government will reimburse ₹25 per meal to the agencies running the canteens. The project saw 22 bids, and finally, 11 NGOs and agencies were selected to operate the facilities.
Each meal will weigh approximately 600 grams and will follow a consistent menu. For instance, Monday lunch will include seasonal vegetables, lentils, rice, roti/paratha/chapati, and pickles. Dinner may feature the same items or alternatives such as rajma or chickpeas with rice, ensuring nutritious and balanced meals for the public.
Initially, the budget for the construction of Atal Canteens was ₹104.2 crore, but it was revised to ₹118.8 crore to accommodate design modifications. The Delhi cabinet had approved the proposal on September 18, with plans to build 100 canteens across more than 500 slum areas in the city.
