Srinagar: The spillway gates of Salal Dam in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district have been opened as part of a silt-flushing operation, leading to variations in the Chenab River’s water flow, officials said. The Salal Power Station issued an advisory before beginning the process, alerting people living in areas located upstream and downstream of the dam about possible changes in river discharge.
According to the advisory issued on September 15, 2026, the silt removal operation started after the opening of the spillway gates. Authorities said the Chenab River’s water discharge may continue to fluctuate during the process.
Officials have cautioned residents living along the Chenab River to stay away from the water body and its banks until the operation is completed. People have been advised against entering the river for activities such as bathing, fishing or any movement involving animals and vehicles near the water channel.
Authorities have urged residents to remain alert and follow safety instructions to avoid any untoward incident during the dam operation.
The advisory was issued as a precautionary measure for communities located near the river. Officials said the temporary changes in water levels are linked to the technical operation at the dam and residents should avoid unnecessary movement near the riverbanks.
The administration has asked people to cooperate with safety measures and remain cautious until further updates are issued.
The Salal Power Station is situated on the banks of the Chenab River at Jyotipuram in Reasi district. The hydropower project is operated by the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation Limited (NHPC). The ongoing silt-flushing activity is aimed at managing sediment accumulation in the reservoir while ensuring the continued functioning of the power station.
