Jammu: An Indian Army soldier lost his life after his service rifle accidentally discharged while he was performing operational duties at a forward post in the Akhnoor sector of Jammu, officials said on Monday.
According to officials, the tragic incident occurred on Sunday in the forward Jogwan area of Khour during routine operational deployment. Preliminary information indicates that the soldier's service weapon discharged accidentally, inflicting critical injuries.
The injured soldier was immediately evacuated and provided emergency medical assistance. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries.
Following the incident, the soldier's mortal remains were shifted to the Military Hospital in Akhnoor for post-mortem examination. Officials said the body will be handed over to the next of kin after the completion of legal and administrative formalities.
Authorities have initiated the necessary procedures to ascertain the exact circumstances surrounding the accidental discharge. No indication of enemy action or militant involvement has been reported in the incident.
