Supreme Court
New Delhi: Hearing petitions alleging irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Tamil Nadu, the Supreme Court on Thursday adopted a strict approach, issuing a series of transparency-focused directions to the Election Commission of India (ECI).
A Bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant directed the ECI to publicly display the list of voters placed under the “Logical Discrepancy” category at Gram Panchayat offices, taluka (sub-division) offices, and urban ward offices across the state.
Apex Court Clarified
The apex court clarified that individuals whose names appear on the list will be given 10 days from the date of publication to submit the required documents-either personally or through authorized representatives.

The list must also mention a brief reason for the discrepancy, enabling voters to respond effectively. Objections may be filed at the respective sub-division offices.
Emphasising smooth implementation, the court instructed all District Collectors to strictly comply with the Election Commission’s guidelines and ensure adequate staffing for the SIR exercise.
To prevent any disruption, the Supreme Court further directed the Director General of Police (DGP) and the Tamil Nadu Police Commissioner to ensure maintenance of law and order, making it clear that the entire revision process must be completed peacefully, transparently, and without intimidation.
