Washington: India has hit back at Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s remarks at the United Nations General Assembly, accusing Islamabad of using international platforms to divert attention from terrorism-related concerns.
Exercising its right of reply at the UN, India’s representative Petal Gahlot said Pakistan’s claims could not hide its record on terrorism. She said, “Terrorism by Pakistan will have consequences,” while responding to Islamabad’s statements.
The response came after Shehbaz Sharif raised regional issues, including Jammu and Kashmir, during his address at the UN General Assembly.
Responding to Pakistan’s allegations, India said the world has witnessed the impact of terrorism and those responsible for supporting such activities must be held accountable.
India’s representative said, “The country that has nurtured terrorism for decades has no right to preach on peace and security.”
New Delhi also accused Pakistan of attempting to present a different picture before the international community while ignoring concerns related to terrorism.
During his UN speech, Shehbaz Sharif spoke about Kashmir and other regional issues. Pakistan has repeatedly raised the Kashmir matter at international forums, while India has maintained that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of the country.
India responded by stating that Pakistan should focus on addressing terrorism-related challenges instead of making allegations against others.
The latest exchange is another instance of sharp differences between India and Pakistan at the United Nations. Both countries have frequently used the global platform to present their positions on security, terrorism and regional matters.
India has consistently highlighted terrorism as a major challenge in its international engagements, while Pakistan has rejected allegations made by New Delhi.
The UN General Assembly session once again witnessed a diplomatic clash between the two neighbours, with terrorism remaining at the centre of the debate.
