Dushanbe: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday called on Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) member countries to adopt a firm and unified approach against terrorism, asserting that there can be no justification for terrorist activities and no double standards in tackling the threat.

Addressing the SCO Council of Heads of Government meeting in Tajikistan’s capital, Dushanbe, Defence Minister stressed that terrorism poses a serious challenge to global peace, economic growth and social stability. He urged member nations to take collective action against those who finance, support or provide shelter to terrorist organisations.

Rajnath Singh Calls for Unified Action Against Terrorism

Singh said terrorism claims innocent lives, disrupts trade and investment, and exposes young people to radicalisation, depriving them of opportunities. He emphasised that tackling the problem requires dismantling the entire ecosystem that enables terrorist activities.

He also highlighted India’s commitment to the SCO’s broader objectives, recalling Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s emphasis on security, connectivity and opportunity during the organisation’s summit in Bishkek.

According to Singh, these priorities are closely linked, as security creates conditions for investment while better connectivity supports trade and economic cooperation.

India Backs SCO Economic Cooperation Plan

The Defence Minister expressed India’s support for adopting the Action Plan for the Multilateral Trade and Economic Cooperation Programme for 2026–2030.

He said economic engagement within the SCO should be inclusive with benefits reaching every member country. Singh called for stronger supply chains, improved trade and investment opportunities and greater use of technology to support development.

Food and Energy Security Remain Concerns

Highlighting the challenges facing the global economy, Singh pointed to geopolitical tensions and conflicts that are disrupting trade routes and supply chains. He also described energy and food security as important concerns for India.

He noted that emerging technologies are reshaping economies but may also deepen existing inequalities.
