Mumbai: A local court here has convicted three Bangladeshi citizens for illegally staying in India and awarded three months’ imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 500 on each of them. Additionally, the court has ordered that the trio be deported from India after completion of their sentence period.

According to the police, on 9 January, a Bangladeshi male was arrested from a hotel near the Western Express Highway in Malad East, while on March 7, two women were caught outside the gate of the Omkar SRA Building located in Kurar village, Malad East.

During interrogation, none of them were found in possession of valid documents.

The individuals have been identified as Shubham Sardar, Mehrun Sardar, and Alpna Sardar.

They were doing small jobs in the city.

Earlier Arrest

On 25 May a family of nine Bangladeshi nationals who worked in a brick kiln in Haryana's Mewat but fled fearing arrest for entering India illegally have been nabbed by the Delhi police, officials said on Sunday.

Upon receiving information about illegal Bangladeshis, a police team detailed a surveillance and verification drive in Wazirpur JJ Colony on May 23 which led to the detention of one such person.

His interrogation helped the police apprehend eight other Bangladeshi nationals, including a newborn, of the same family who were living in India without valid documents, an official said.

They were nabbed from the Bharat Nagar area of northwest Delhi.

A smartphone with a banned video call and chat app that the family used to communicate with their kin in Bangladesh has been seized from them, he said.

During questioning, the family said that had entered the country illegally through the India-Bangladesh border in West Bengal's Cooch Behar district. They initially claimed Indian nationality but were found to be from Bangladesh Kurigram district, police said.

The apprehended individuals, including a 45-day-old infant, were handed over to the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) for deportation proceedings.

Police said further investigation was underway to trace the facilitating such entries and the local support system.

Bangladeshi Smuggler Killed

A Bangladeshi smuggler was killed on 2 June following a violent clash with Border Security Force (BSF) personnel along India-Bangladesh border in the Debipur area under the Rangaouti panchayat of Kailashahar in the Unokoti district.

Police said the incident occurred at the border patch between pillars 56 and 57 amid heavy rainfall.

Bangladeshis Launched Attack On BSF

According to a report, a group of Bangladeshi smugglers launched an attack on BSF jawans stationed at the border post late on the night of 31 May.

Taking advantage of poor visibility due to rain, the group allegedly pelted stones and attempted to attack the jawans with sharp weapons. Despite repeated warnings from BSF, the smugglers intensified their attack, forcing the jawans to fire in self-defence.
