Lucknow: The chessboard for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections has already been set in motion. Ahead of the elections, the BJP has accelerated its preparations to make a major political move in the state. Today marks the second cabinet expansion of Yogi Adityanath’s current government. This expansion is not merely about increasing the number of ministers; it is being seen as a key strategy by the BJP ahead of the upcoming elections.

Regional Balance

It is believed that through this cabinet expansion, the party will aim to balance regional, caste, and social equations. The BJP hopes to further expand and strengthen its political base in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the elections.

In today’s cabinet expansion, two ministers are set to be promoted, while six new faces will be inducted into the cabinet. These new appointments come after extensive deliberations within the party, with careful political calculations made from Lucknow to Delhi before finalizing the list.

According to sources, the BJP’s focus in this cabinet expansion is on those social groups and regions where the party faced challenges during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and recent political developments.

Samajwadi Party In Last General Elections

In the last general elections, the Samajwadi Party, under Akhilesh Yadav’s leadership, delivered its best performance to date. In Uttar Pradesh, which has 80 Lok Sabha seats, the Samajwadi Party won 37 seats in 2024, while the BJP was limited to just 33 seats. In comparison, the BJP had won 64 seats in the 2019 general elections. This represents an almost 50% reduction in seats for the BJP, making it a major concern for the party.

Unexpected Defeat Of BJP

After the unexpected defeat in the last general elections, the BJP began formulating a strategy to regain lost ground. The plan includes giving representation to leaders from Purvanchal, Bundelkhand, and Western Uttar Pradesh to strengthen coordination between the party organization and the government. Additionally, by including a balanced mix of OBC, Dalit, and Brahmin leaders in this cabinet expansion, the BJP aims to send a strong social message ahead of the 2027 elections.

Political analysts believe that the cabinet expansion will also aim to accommodate leaders who have long been expecting significant responsibilities within the party or government. This will not only maintain internal balance but also send a positive signal to party workers.

New Faces To Be Inducted

Moreover, efforts are being made to engage allied parties as well. By providing representation to NDA allies, the BJP seeks to convey a message of coalition unity. It is also believed that including some new faces is part of a strategy to appeal to young and women voters.

The BJP is set to reward leaders who have defected from the Samajwadi Party. Rebel SP leaders Manoj Pandey and Pooja Pal are being inducted as ministers in the Yogi cabinet. This move sends a strong message from the Yogi government and the BJP: leaders who weaken opposition parties through defection will receive special attention, which could politically encourage other dissatisfied leaders in rival parties to join the BJP.

This cabinet expansion comes at a time when opposition parties, led by SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, are continuously pressing the government on issues such as unemployment, law and order, and inflation. Through this expansion, the BJP aims to send a significant political and social message. The cabinet reshuffle is also being seen as a step to maintain a delicate caste and political balance.
