Kolkata: Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Saturday called for a united opposition movement against the BJP in West Bengal, hours after BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as the state’s new Chief Minister.

Addressing supporters near her Kalighat residence in Kolkata on the occasion of Rabindranath Tagore’s birth anniversary, Banerjee urged political parties, student organisations and civil society groups opposed to the BJP to come together on a common platform.

She said the BJP should be viewed as the “primary political opponent” and stressed the need for collective resistance in Bengal’s changing political landscape.

Appeal Extended to Left Parties and National Leaders

Mamata Banerjee appealed not only to regional parties but also to Left and ultra-Left groups to unite against the BJP. She also invited national opposition parties to participate in broader discussions aimed at strengthening anti-BJP coordination.

The former Chief Minister said she was open to dialogue with any political force willing to work together politically against the saffron party.

Her remarks came days after the BJP secured a decisive victory in the West Bengal Assembly elections, ending the TMC’s 15-year rule in the state.

During her address, Banerjee also alleged that TMC workers and supporters were facing intimidation and attacks in different parts of the state following the election results.

She claimed that incidents of political violence and intimidation had increased after the BJP’s victory, though the BJP has repeatedly denied such allegations. The TMC chief urged party workers to remain united and continue organisational activities despite the electoral setback.

Opposition Politics Back in Focus

Mamata’s statement has reignited debate around the future of opposition unity at the national level. The development comes amid growing discussion over the INDIA bloc and the role different opposition parties may play after recent election outcomes in Bengal and Tamil Nadu.

Her remarks also followed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s assertion that only the Congress can effectively challenge Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP nationally.

Political observers believe Mamata’s call for a broader alliance signals an attempt to rebuild opposition coordination after the BJP’s breakthrough victory in Bengal.
