New Delhi: Following the recent trade deal between India and the US, the US has taken a step that has proved a major blow to Pakistan. The Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) posted a map showing all of Jammu and Kashmir as part of India. This map also includes Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). This map was shared after the release of the framework of the interim trade agreement between the US and India.

Has US stance on Kashmir appeared to be changing?

The US's previous stance on Kashmir has been that it is a bilateral issue between India and Pakistan and should be resolved through dialogue. In September 2023, then-US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti reiterated this stance. However, during the military tensions between India and Pakistan last year, US President Donald Trump made several statements that were at odds with previous US policy. Trump even offered to mediate on the Kashmir issue.

Trump's Statements and Social Media Posts

Following the ceasefire, Trump stated on social media that he would see if the Kashmir issue could be resolved after a thousand years. Now, the map released by USTR has challenged Pakistan's propaganda by showing Jammu and Kashmir as an integral part of India. This move is also unexpected for the current Pakistani government and military, which have been actively opposing Trump's stance over the past few months.

India's Steadfast Position

India has repeatedly clarified that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India. India maintains that any dialogue with Pakistan will only be about the return of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). A unanimous resolution passed in the Indian Parliament on February 22, 1994, stated that PoK is an integral part of India and any attempt to separate it from the country will fail. For this reason, February 22 is celebrated annually as Jammu and Kashmir Resolution Day.

Kashmir Issue in Future

This map by the US has further strengthened India's position on Kashmir in international politics. India's position is clear, and this step will further strengthen its position on the global stage. This is a clear message to Pakistan that PoK is an integral part of India and any debate or propaganda attempt will be thwarted.
