Dehradun: A major weather disaster struck Uttarakhand on Monday, following a sudden cloudburst in Tamak region of Chamoli district. Several vehicles were reportedly washed away after a massive flow of water, mud and debris entered the area, while a recently constructed bridge of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) collapsed due to the force of the overflowing river.
The disaster has severely affected connectivity towards the strategically important Niti Valley and Malari regions. Following the incident, the Chamoli district administration has advised people to avoid unnecessary travel and remain alert amid the ongoing weather conditions. Uttarakhand’s Himalayan districts have been witnessing continuous heavy rainfall for the past several days, increasing the risk of landslides, flash floods and infrastructure damage. The latest incident was reported from Long (Tamak) area of Chamoli district, located around 37 kilometres ahead of Joshimath.
According to preliminary information, multiple cloudburst incidents occurred in the Tamak region, triggering a sudden rise in water levels. A huge amount of mud, stones and debris came rushing down from the mountains, creating a flash flood-like situation and causing severe damage to roads and public infrastructure. The most significant impact was seen near Tamak, where a recently built Valley Bridge under the Border Roads Organisation network was washed away by the powerful water current. The bridge could not withstand the extreme pressure of the overflowing river and collapsed completely.

The destruction of the BRO bridge has disrupted transportation in the region and affected connectivity for more than 17 villages.
