Vande Bharat Sleeper launch delayed again; What’s holding back India’s dream train?

New Delhi: The launch of India’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper train has been pushed back once again, with the Railway Board identifying multiple furnishing and safety issues. Despite an in-principle approval for operations, the high-speed sleeper rake remains in the final phase of manufacturing, delaying its grand debut. This setback comes even as rail enthusiasts await the train’s commercial run, once hailed as a game-changer for overnight travel.

Furnishing Flaws Delay India’s High-Speed Sleeper Dream

The Railway Board’s recent communication to the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO) and all railway zones highlighted serious concerns regarding the interior quality of the 16-coach rake. Issues such as sharp edges in berths, poorly designed curtain handles, and uncleanable “pigeon pockets” between berth connectors have prompted calls for immediate redesigns.

The Board has directed corrective action for the current rake and urged improvements in upcoming versions. Even the Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety (CCRS) flagged similar issues during trial runs earlier this year. The RDSO submitted a revised compliance report on September 1, 2025, but officials say further refinements are still pending.

Focus on Safety and Modern Operations

The Railway Ministry has reiterated the importance of adhering to advanced safety standards before the train can begin service. Among the mandatory requirements are:

Loco pilots will also be trained to decouple semi-permanent couplers within 15 minutes during emergencies, ensuring passenger safety and minimal disruption. Zones have been asked to deploy skilled technical staff for on-route troubleshooting once the train becomes operational.

A Showcase of Indo-Russian Innovation

The Vande Bharat Sleeper has been developed under Kinet Railway Solutions, a joint venture between Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) and Russia’s Transmashholding. Unveiled at the International Railway Equipment Exhibition (IREE) 2025 in New Delhi, the train dazzled onlookers with its sleek aerodynamic design, premium interiors, and futuristic amenities.

The partnership plans to manufacture and maintain 1,920 sleeper coaches, covering 120 train sets, over 35 years, significantly modernizing Indian Railways’ long-distance fleet.

Built for Comfort, Speed, and Style

Powered by a high-speed electric multiple unit (EMU) system, the train can reach a top speed of 180 km/h, operating comfortably at 160 km/h. The 16-coach configuration includes 11 AC 3-tier, 4 AC 2-tier, and 1 luxurious First AC coach, collectively seating over 1,100 passengers.

The First AC cabins feature memory-foam beds, private showers, sliding doors, ambient lighting, and Wi-Fi connectivity, promising an experience akin to flying business class. For senior citizens and differently-abled passengers, wider berths, stable ladders, and soundproof interiors ensure safety and accessibility.
