New Delhi: On Tuesday, Vice-President of India C. P. Radhakrishnan released The Voice of Justice: Justice Gavai Speaks at the Vice-President's Enclave, describing the publication as "an important constitutional document" that captures judicial thought shaped by experience, constitutional discipline and public responsibility.
Addressing a distinguished gathering that included Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant, Supreme Court Judge Justice Vikram Nath, former Chief Justice of India Justice B.R. Gavai, and Commonwealth Legal Education Association (CLEA) President and Editor Prof. (Dr.) S. Sivakumar, the Vice-President underlined the judiciary's central role in preserving constitutional governance and strengthening public confidence in the rule of law.
Speaking at the launch, Shri Radhakrishnan said the book is more than a compilation of judicial reflections, calling it "an important constitutional document reflecting judicial thought shaped by experience, constitutional discipline and public responsibility."
He said Justice B.R. Gavai's distinguished judicial journey exemplifies an unwavering commitment to constitutional principles.
"Justice B.R. Gavai's judicial journey reflects unwavering commitment to constitutional values," the Vice-President said.
Emphasising the enduring relevance of the Constitution, the Vice-President said it continues to provide the framework for democratic governance and national cohesion.
"The Constitution remains the foundation of democratic stability and national unity," he said.
He stressed that constitutional institutions derive their strength from their commitment to constitutional morality, transparency and accountability.
Highlighting the role of the judiciary, Shri Radhakrishnan said courts occupy a vital place in India's constitutional framework by protecting citizens' rights and preserving faith in justice.
He said that the judiciary plays a crucial role in preserving constitutional governance and safeguarding citizens' trust in the rule of law.
The Vice-President also said governance under the Constitution must continually evolve to address changing public expectations.
"Constitutional governance must remain responsive to citizens' aspirations," he said, adding that institutions should remain sensitive to the aspirations of ordinary citizens and evolving social realities.
The Vice-President said the strength of democratic institutions ultimately rests on integrity and public confidence.
"Strong institutions and justice are sustained by integrity, constitutional discipline and public trust," he said.
He noted that constitutional values must guide both institutions and individuals entrusted with public responsibilities.
Lawyers urged to provide free legal aid
Calling upon the legal fraternity to strengthen access to justice, Shri Radhakrishnan urged lawyers to contribute regularly towards assisting economically weaker sections.
"Lawyers should periodically provide free legal aid to the poorest," the Vice-President said, stressing that access to justice should not be limited by financial constraints.

The book launch was attended by Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant, Supreme Court Judge Justice Vikram Nath, former Chief Justice of India Justice B.R. Gavai, Commonwealth Legal Education Association (CLEA) President and Editor Prof. (Dr.) S. Sivakumar, along with members of the legal fraternity, academics and other distinguished guests.
While speaking at the event Justice Surya Kant said: “There are some who command attention by force of position. But Justice Gavai has never worn office heavily. He has often done it differently: through patience, good humour, and a natural ease with people.”
“His warmth has softened many stiff rooms. His laughter has lightened many difficult days. And his ability to carry colleagues along, has helped institutional conversations remain humane, even when the issues before us were complex”, he further added.
“This Book is essential reading because it tells us exactly why the ‘voice of justice’ must be reasoned, but never cold. Why must it be firm, but never arrogant. And why it must be constitutional, while remaining humane. Justice Gavai’s voice has reminded us of that crucial balance”. CJI said.
“Today, we launch not only a literary achievement but a moral compass- one that will guide lawyers, scholars and citizens alike.” Surya Kant added.
The event celebrated the release of The Voice of Justice: Justice Gavai Speaks, a volume that documents the constitutional philosophy, judicial reflections and public addresses of former Chief Justice of India Justice B.R. Gavai.
