Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay announced that women heads of households will receive three free LPG cylinders annually under the ‘Annapoorani Super Six’ scheme. The initiative is expected to benefit around 1.3 crore families and will be rolled out from Pongal next year.
The scheme will cover families with an annual income of up to ₹2.5 lakh, economically weaker sections, small and marginal farmers’ families, and households of persons with disabilities.
Under the plan, the LPG cylinder cost will be reimbursed directly into the bank accounts of eligible women beneficiaries after booking and delivery, based on official billing records from oil marketing companies.
Vijay also announced an expansion of the existing free bus travel facility for women. The scheme will now include state-run buses, express buses and deluxe buses.
The Chief Minister said there would be no income limit or restriction on the number of trips for women using the free travel facility.
The move is aimed at improving women’s mobility and reducing daily travel expenses for families across Tamil Nadu.
In another major announcement, the Tamil Nadu government said it would not proceed with the proposed second airport at Parandur near Chennai.
Vijay said the project could impact agricultural land and affect the livelihood of farmers and local residents. He added that Chennai needs a new airport due to rising passenger traffic, industrial growth and cargo requirements, but it should be developed at a location causing minimal impact on farmland and residential areas.
The Chief Minister highlighted that the existing Meenambakkam airport currently has the capacity to handle around 30 million passengers annually.
The announcements come as the Vijay-led government focuses on welfare schemes and development policies in the state.
