Humayun Kabir announces 'Janata Unnayan Party'
Kolkata: Suspended Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Humayun Kabir on Sunday launched 'Janata Unnayan Party.'for the upliftment and welfare of the people of West Bengal. Explaining the name of the party, Kabir said that 'Janata' represents the common people, while 'Unnayan' means development and progress.
According to Kabir, the 'Janata Unnayan Party' will solely focus on development and shun divisive politics. He criticised the ruling TMC for ignoring welfare of the people and the rights of the minorities. He said that his political outfit will fight for the rights of the minorities and downtroden people of West Bengal.
Kabir also shared details about the party’s proposed election symbol. He said that the first preference submitted to the Election Commission is 'Table', while the second option is 'Twin Roses'. He recalled that the Table symbol was allotted to him when he contested the 2016 Assembly elections as an independent candidate.
Looking ahead to the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, Kabir said that his party is prepared to contest all 294 Assembly seats if the situation demands. However, he also called upon anti-TMC and anti-BJP political forces to come together and form a broad alliance.
He does not want to be alighed with right wing or left wing parties. He wants to work for the neglected people of the state. He wants his party to work on socialist principles for development and welfare of the poor, downtrodden and minorities.
“If a united front is formed, we are open to cooperation. Otherwise, we have the strength to contest independently across the state,” Kabir told the media. He added that his party’s campaign would revolve around development, governance, and public welfare.
Background: Suspension from TMC
Humayun Kabir was elected as a TMC MLA from the Bharatpur Assembly constituency. He was recently suspended from the party following a controversy related to the laying of a foundation stone of a Babri Masjid-style mosque in Murshidabad. After his suspension, Kabir announced his decision to form a new political platform.
