Kolkata: Suspended Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Humayun Kabir has sparked a new controversy in state politics by laying the foundation stone for the 'Babri Masjid' in Murshidabad district.

This foundation stone laying ceremony is being seen as a major political signal ahead of next year's assembly elections.

Suspension from TMC and Preparation for a New Party

Humayun Kabir was suspended from the TMC by Mamata Banerjee. Following this, Kabir has announced the formation of a new party and plans to contest the elections in alliance with the AIMIM. This is expected to impact the Muslim vote bank in West Bengal politics.

Humayun Kabir's Political Journey

Kabir began his political career with the Congress. He subsequently joined the TMC and became a minister in the Mamata Banerjee government. In 2015, he was expelled from the TMC for six years due to anti-party activities.

He contested the 2016 assembly elections as an independent candidate but lost. He then joined the BJP in 2018 and contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from Murshidabad but lost. Returning to the TMC in 2021, he won the MLA election from the Bharatpur seat.

Controversial Statements and the Muslim-Hindu Equation

During the last Lok Sabha elections, Humayun Kabir made a controversial statement, saying that if he won the election, he would throw Hindus into the Bhagirathi River.

In his speech, he cited the Muslim population being 70 percent and the Hindu population being 30 percent. This statement sparked a massive controversy in the state, and the BJP targeted him.
