New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued fresh weather alerts for several parts of the country as the southwest monsoon regained strength, triggering the threat of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds.
The weather agency has placed multiple states under Red and Orange Alerts and urged residents to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather conditions.
According to the IMD, a series of low-pressure systems over the Bay of Bengal has intensified monsoon activity, resulting in widespread rainfall across the country since the beginning of August. The weather department said the active monsoon conditions are expected to continue over the coming days, increasing the risk of waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and localised flooding in several regions.

The national capital, Delhi, and adjoining areas are likely to receive above-normal rainfall, bringing relief from humid weather but also raising concerns over urban flooding and traffic congestion.
In Uttar Pradesh, rainfall activity has intensified across several districts, with the IMD forecasting continued showers and thunderstorms. Residents have been advised to monitor local weather updates before stepping out.
West Bengal is expected to witness the most severe impact, with the IMD issuing a Red Alert for selected districts due to the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall and strong winds.
Orange Alerts have also been issued for parts of Assam, Kerala, Karnataka, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh. These states are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by gusty winds of 40-60 kmph. The IMD has also warned of lightning strikes, urging people to stay indoors during thunderstorms and avoid open fields.
Heavy rainfall is also expected over parts of Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and other regions, with authorities closely monitoring the evolving weather situation.

The weather department has warned that continuous rainfall in the Himalayan states could trigger landslides, mudslides, and road blockages, while low-lying areas in the plains may face severe waterlogging and disruption to transport services.
Disaster management agencies and local administrations have been directed to remain on alert and ensure emergency response teams are prepared to tackle any weather-related emergencies.
The IMD said that although the low-pressure area over southwest Madhya Pradesh, eastern Rajasthan, and Gujarat has weakened, abundant moisture in the atmosphere will continue to fuel monsoon activity. As a result, widespread rainfall is expected to persist over the next few days.
