Srinagar: The rain fury is set to continue unabashed in Jammu and Kashmir over the coming days as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of sustained rainfall activity, with an increased risk of flash floods and landslides across the mountainous Union Territory.
According to the latest forecast issued by the IMD's Meteorological Centre in Srinagar, an active weather system fuelled by favourable monsoon conditions and local atmospheric instability is expected to bring widespread rainfall, increasing the likelihood of heavy precipitation in several districts.
Light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms is likely at many places till August 4, mainly during the afternoon, evening and early morning hours. The IMD has also forecast heavy rain, brief but intense showers and isolated spells of torrential rainfall in a few districts, which may lead to rapid water accumulation, poor visibility and disruption to normal life.
From August 5 to 7, light to moderate rain and thunderstorms are expected to continue across many parts of the Union Territory. A few locations may witness short-duration but intense downpours due to localized convective weather systems, increasing the risk of waterlogging and traffic disruptions.
Rainfall activity is likely to ease slightly between August 8 and 10, with scattered areas expected to receive light rain and thunderstorms. However, isolated places may still experience brief intense showers, prompting authorities to advise residents to remain cautious.
The IMD has specifically warned that a few districts in the Jammu Division may receive heavy rainfall or brief spells of intense showers on August 2 and 3. Such weather conditions could significantly increase the risk of flash floods, landslides, mudslides, overflowing seasonal streams and damage to vulnerable infrastructure in hilly and low-lying areas.
The weather department has further cautioned that torrential rain over the next five days may trigger flash floods and landslides at vulnerable locations across Jammu and Kashmir. District administrations and disaster management authorities have been advised to closely monitor the evolving weather situation and take necessary precautionary measures.
Residents, tourists and commuters have been urged to follow official weather updates, avoid unnecessary travel to landslide-prone areas during periods of heavy rainfall, and comply with advisories issued by local authorities under disaster management protocols.
