New Delhi: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has successfully carried out a series of advanced flight tests, marking a major step forward in India’s missile defence capabilities, according to the Ministry of Defence.

The trials were conducted on June 10 and 11, 2026, and showcased both a multi-layer ballistic missile defence system and a newly developed medium-range naval strike missile.

Successful Missile Interception Demonstrated

During the tests, India’s defence network successfully detected and intercepted simulated ballistic missile threats. The system used a coordinated framework of ground-based and sea-based radar systems to track incoming targets and guide interceptor missiles with precision.

Officials stated that the trials validated a layered defence approach, where multiple interception systems work together to neutralise threats at different stages of flight. This strengthens India’s ability to respond to complex aerial attacks.

Naval Anti-Ship Missile Tested for First Time

Alongside the missile defence trials, DRDO also conducted the maiden flight test of the Naval Anti-Ship Missile–Medium Range (NASM-MR). The missile is designed to enhance India’s maritime strike capability.

According to officials, the system met all mission objectives during the test. It successfully demonstrated key functions including navigation accuracy, target tracking, and strike precision, confirming its operational readiness for future deployment.

India Joins Select Group of Nations

With the successful demonstration of a ballistic missile defence system, India has joined a limited group of countries possessing such advanced defensive technology. The achievement is considered a significant milestone in the country’s strategic defence development.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO scientists and described the development as a major enhancement to national security, stating that the systems would provide protection against both aerial and maritime threats.

Strategic Impact and Indigenous Development

Experts believe the successful trials lay the foundation for a robust, multi-layered national defence shield. The system is expected to safeguard critical infrastructure and strengthen India’s preparedness against evolving threats.

Officials also highlighted that these systems are being developed indigenously, aligning with India’s long-term goal of self-reliance in defence technology and advanced military systems.
