New Delhi: The Amavasya (New Moon) of the month of Vaishakh will be observed this year on April 17, 2026-a day considered to be of immense significance in Sanatan Dharma. According to the Drik Panchang, the Amavasya Tithi (lunar day) will commence at 8:11 PM on April 16 and conclude at 5:21 PM on April 17. Based on the 'Udaya Tithi' (the lunar day prevailing at sunrise), this Amavasya will be celebrated on April 17. This day is ascribed special significance for performing ritual bathing (Snan), acts of charity (Daan), and 'Tarpan' (ritual offerings) dedicated to one's ancestors ('Pitrs'). It is believed that auspicious deeds performed on this day please the ancestors, thereby bestowing blessings of happiness, peace, success, and prosperity upon one's life.

Auspicious Time ('Muhurat') for Bathing and Charity on Vaishakh Amavasya (Vaishakh Amavasya 2026 Snan Daan Muhurat)

On the day of Amavasya, performing ritual bathing and acts of charity during the 'Brahma Muhurat' is considered highly auspicious. On this day, the auspicious window for bathing and charity will extend from 4:25 AM to 5:09 AM.

The Significance of Vaishakh Amavasya

The Amavasya Tithi is considered unique because the Moon remains invisible on this day, and the atmosphere is imbued with a distinct energy. According to Vedic astrology, individuals whose horoscopes indicate a weak placement of the Moon may experience feelings of mental restlessness or stress on this day. From a religious perspective, this day is dedicated to one's ancestors. Remembering one's ancestors and performing 'Tarpan' and acts of charity on this day helps one receive their blessings, which can, in turn, alleviate the hardships and tribulations of life.

Why Are Ancestral Blessings Essential?

It is believed that when ancestors are pleased, the obstacles encountered in life gradually begin to diminish. Often, success begins to manifest even without excessive effort; conversely, if the ancestors remain displeased, an individual may be compelled to face greater struggles and adversities.

What to Do on Vaishakh Amavasya

- Wake up early in the morning and take a ritual bath. - If possible, take a holy dip in the Ganges, the Yamuna, or any other sacred river.
- If bathing at home, mix a few drops of holy Ganges water (Gangajal) into your bathwater.
- Perform worship rituals (Puja) and remember your ancestors (Pitras).
- Perform Tarpan (ancestral rites), if possible.
- Give donations to the needy.

Who should exercise special caution?

Those whose horoscopes indicate a weak Moon-or whose Moon is positioned in the 6th, 8th, or 12th house-may attain mental peace by performing holy bathing and acts of charity on this day.

Which mantras should be chanted?

Chanting mantras such as "Om Namah Shivaya" or "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya" regularly helps calm the mind and brings balance to one's life.
