Bengaluru: A Zomato delivery agent in Bengaluru recently shared a video of himself delivering an order that quickly went viral, amassing over 7.6 million views. In the clip, the rider, Arjun Sethi, is seen walking a long distance after being asked to deliver to a customer’s doorstep despite restrictions on bringing his bike inside the building. The customer reportedly refused to come downstairs, insisting that Arjun deliver the order himself.

Sethi explained that the journey to the doorstep was unexpectedly long, around 200 to 300 metres, and highlighted the physical effort involved. He pointed out that he was not allowed to bring his bike inside the premises and had requested the customer to come down, but was obliged to walk the distance nonetheless.

Conflict Over Delivery Etiquette

The video captured the rider expressing his frustration, noting that he felt the customer should have at least offered a glass of water after such a long walk. Sethi also mentioned that Zomato instructs delivery personnel to respect customer requests, requiring them to deliver wherever asked, even if inconvenient. He concluded the video by advising viewers to reconsider taking up delivery work, underlining the physical and mental toll of the job.

Divided Public Reactions

The video prompted widespread discussion online, with opinions sharply divided. Some social media users sympathised with Sethi, emphasising the need to show respect and understanding to delivery workers. Comments such as, “People forget there is a human on the other side of the order. Showing a little kindness is not that difficult,” reflected this sentiment.

Others, however, argued that doorstep delivery is part of the job and that employees should expect to walk or face minor inconveniences. A user explained, “In many jobs, people end up doing extra work at times. Recording it and turning it into a reel may not be the right way to handle it.” Another comment stressed the mutual responsibility of both parties, noting that delivery charges already account for doorstep service.

Empathy and Understanding in Urban Services

The incident highlights the challenges of urban delivery services, especially in high-rise apartments and crowded areas where accessibility is limited. Many users highlighted the importance of empathy on both sides. One person wrote, “It is nearly 500 metres. If the bike was allowed, it would have been easier. But understanding the effort involved matters.” Another added, “The customer is not wrong, but considering the delivery person’s effort would have been thoughtful.”

Implications for Delivery Workers

This viral episode has reignited discussions about the working conditions of delivery agents, especially in cities like Bengaluru where walking long distances, navigating stairs, and carrying heavy orders are common. The video underlines the need for better policies regarding accessibility, customer cooperation, and awareness of the challenges faced by frontline delivery personnel.
