Kolkata: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has dismissed reports suggesting a possible merger with the Congress, calling such claims “baseless” amid growing political uncertainty within the party. Sources familiar with the developments said no proposal for a merger is under consideration.
However, both parties have reportedly kept communication channels open and continue to engage on matters of mutual political interest.
According to the reports, discussions between Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee focused on strengthening coordination between the two parties. The leaders are also understood to have agreed on holding the next INDIA bloc meeting in Hyderabad.

While a formal merger has been ruled out, the possibility of a future alliance has not been dismissed, indicating ongoing efforts to maintain opposition unity.
The speculation gained momentum after senior Congress leaders met TMC chief Mamata Banerjee in Delhi. The meetings came at a time when the TMC is grappling with one of the biggest internal crises in its history.
The party has witnessed a large-scale rebellion, with 58 MLAs reportedly breaking ranks. Dissatisfaction has also surfaced among Members of Parliament, further intensifying pressure on the party leadership.
In another setback, Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev resigned from both the Upper House and the TMC on Wednesday. Her exit followed the resignation of veteran leader Sukhendu Sekhar Ray earlier this week, who cited corruption and misgovernance within the party.

Meanwhile, rebel MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar claimed that a group of 20 MPs had sought separate seating arrangements in Parliament and would work alongside the Centre for West Bengal’s development.
Rebel leader Ritabrata Banerjee rejected merger speculation and asserted that the dissident faction remains committed to the Trinamool Congress identity.
“We are the real Trinamool Congress. We are not merging with the Congress,” he said, claiming support from a majority of TMC legislators and a growing number of MPs.
