‘Couldn’t have asked for a better omen’: TMC mocks Amit Shah’s two-third majority prediction for BJP

Amit Shah predicts a two-thirds BJP win in Bengal 2026, but TMC isn’t worried. They cite his past ‘sure-shot’ forecasts that spectacularly failed. Could history really repeat itself or is this the calm before the storm?

Kolkata: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) responded sharply to Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s prediction that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will secure a two-thirds majority in the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections. Shah made the assertion during a press conference in Kolkata, where he also criticized TMC over alleged corruption and governance failures.

Reacting to Shah’s claim, the TMC thanked the home minister sarcastically, saying they “couldn’t have asked for a better omen.” The party highlighted Amit Shah’s track record of past predictions for BJP, implying that history was not on his side.

TMC Highlights Amit Shah’s Past Misses

In a post on their official X handle, TMC noted: “There’s one thing we love about @AmitShah. His predictions. In the 2021 Bengal Assembly elections, he declared ‘Pakka 200 paar.’ BJP landed at 77 seats. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he forecast 30 seats. BJP got 12.”

The post continued, “And now, for 2026, he has announced a two-thirds majority win for BJP. If history is any indication, this is excellent news for us. So truly, thank you. We couldn’t have asked for a better omen.” TMC’s comments underscored the gap between Shah’s confident forecasts and actual electoral outcomes.

Amit Shah Highlights BJP’s Growth in Bengal

During the press conference, Shah emphasized BJP’s electoral progress in the state since 2014. He said, “In 2014 Lok Sabha elections, BJP got 17% votes and 2 seats. In 2016 Assembly elections, we got 10% votes and 3 seats. By 2019 Lok Sabha elections, BJP secured 41% votes and 18 seats. In 2021 Assembly elections, BJP increased to 21% votes and 77 seats.”

Shah added that in 2024, BJP obtained 39% votes and 12 seats, and claimed that this momentum would translate into a majority in the 2026 Assembly elections.

Criticism of Mamata Banerjee

The Home Minister also took aim at West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. He accused her of corruption, obstructing central government relief efforts, and failing to address infiltration in the state. Shah alleged that Banerjee sought demographic changes to consolidate votes, framing it as a security and governance concern.

The TMC, however, chose to focus on his prediction rather than his criticism, signaling confidence ahead of the 2026 Assembly polls.
