The mother of the RG Kar rape-murder victim has expressed her intention to contest the West Bengal Assembly elections from Panihati, citing her fight for justice and women’s safety as the driving force behind her decision.

Kolkata: The mother of the victim in the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape and murder case has expressed her intention to enter electoral politics ahead of the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections.
She indicated that she is considering contesting from the Panihati constituency in North 24 Parganas, where her family resides.
Speaking about her decision, she said her primary motivation is to seek justice for her daughter and to advocate for women’s safety in the state. She added that her earlier hesitation to join politics was due to emotional reasons but that she now feels prepared to take the step.
She also claimed that she had previously received an offer from the Bharatiya Janata Party but had not been ready to accept it at the time.
While there has been no official confirmation regarding her candidature, her statement has sparked speculation in political circles. The Bharatiya Janata Party has not yet announced a candidate for the Panihati seat, leading to discussions that a decision may be taken at a later stage.
Party representatives have stated that any final decision on candidates will be made by the central parliamentary committee.
The victim’s mother also made allegations against rival political parties, claiming that the incident had been used for political purposes. She accused opposition groups of leveraging the case for electoral gains.
In response, leaders from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) rejected the allegations. Party officials stated that they had supported the victim’s family during the crisis and denied any attempt to politicise the tragedy.
