The BJP has released its first list of candidates for 144 seats in the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections, fielding senior leaders such as Suvendu Adhikari and Dilip Ghosh as the state prepares for two-phase polling in April.

Kolkata: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday released its first list of candidates for 144 constituencies for the upcoming 2026 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election. The list includes several prominent leaders from the party as it prepares for the electoral contest in the eastern state.
Among the key candidates announced, senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari will contest the election from two constituencies: Bhabanipur and Nandigram.
Bhabanipur is currently represented by Mamata Banerjee. In the previous Assembly election in 2021, Adhikari contested from Nandigram and defeated Banerjee in a closely watched contest.

Former state BJP president Dilip Ghosh has been nominated from Kharagpur Sadar constituency. The party has also fielded Agnimitra Paul from Asansol South, while former Rajya Sabha member Swapan Dasgupta will contest from the Rashbehari constituency.
The list includes candidates from several regions of the state as the party begins its preparations for the upcoming polls.
The announcement of candidates comes a day after the Election Commission of India declared the schedule for the West Bengal Assembly elections. Polling in the state will be conducted in two phases on April 23 and April 29, while the counting of votes will take place on May 4.

The elections will decide the composition of the 140-member West Bengal Assembly. In the previous election held in 2021, the ruling All India Trinamool Congress secured 215 seats, while the BJP emerged as the main opposition with 77 seats. Political parties have now begun finalising candidates and preparing for the upcoming campaign.
