Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has announced an ambitious plan to transform Chennai into a global sports destination with the development of a world-class Olympic City and a dedicated Motorsports City.
Making the announcement in the state Assembly, Vijay said the Tamil Nadu government will establish an Olympic City equipped with international-standard sports facilities, advanced training centres, sports science and sports medicine units.
The proposed Olympic City will be developed by the Tamil Nadu Sports Development Authority and will include modern sports arenas, athlete accommodation, coaching facilities and high-performance training infrastructure.
Vijay said the project aims to help athletes from Tamil Nadu prepare for global competitions, including the Olympic Games, while creating an ecosystem to produce more international-level champions.
Along with the Olympic City, the Chief Minister announced plans for a dedicated Motorsports City in Chennai that will host Formula 1 and other international racing events.
"The talents of youth in motor sports will be identified, and training and racing opportunities will be provided to create national and international level champions," Vijay said.
He added that developing world-class racing infrastructure would boost tourism, automobile manufacturing, employment opportunities and economic growth in the state.
The announcement comes amid renewed efforts to bring Formula 1 back to India. Earlier, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports had formed a task force to explore ways to revive motorsports in the country, with a possible return of F1 racing by 2028.
With Chennai’s strong automobile industry base, the proposed Motorsports City is expected to strengthen Tamil Nadu’s position as a major automotive and sporting hub.
The projects mark a major push by the Tamil Nadu government to combine sports infrastructure, youth development and industrial growth under one ambitious vision.
