Bangalore: BJP MP Tejasvi Surya has launched a sharp attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi following the INDIA bloc’s protest against the Election Commission, accusing him of attempting to create an atmosphere of “anarchy” in the country.
Surya alleged that Gandhi’s political ambitions could advance only in an environment marked by instability and disruption. His comments came a day after Opposition MPs marched towards the Election Commission of India in Delhi and several leaders were detained during the protest.
Surya alleged that Rahul Gandhi was deliberately trying to create and sustain a sense of disorder, arguing that political stability had contributed to India's economic growth and broader standing. BJP MP linked the country's development and security situation to what he described as political stability under the Narendra Modi government.
He also credited political stability with progress on economic growth and efforts against terrorism and Naxalism, presenting these as reasons why the opposition should avoid actions that could contribute to disruption.
BJP leader also criticised Gandhi for questioning constitutional institutions, particularly the Election Commission and judiciary. Surya alleged that Gandhi was casting doubts on these institutions following electoral setbacks. The comments come amid an escalating political confrontation between the BJP and Opposition parties over electoral rolls, the Special Intensive Revision exercise and demands concerning Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The Election Commission has faced sustained criticism from Opposition parties over the electoral process, while the BJP has rejected the allegations.
Surya's remarks followed Tuesday's INDIA bloc demonstration in Delhi, when Opposition MPs attempted to march from Parliament towards the Election Commission's office. The protest was stopped by police barricades, after which Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra entered the Akashvani Bhawan premises and joined a sit-in, according to reports. Several Opposition leaders and MPs were detained during the confrontation.
The demonstration focused on Opposition allegations concerning electoral irregularities and demands for action against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Surya also referred to the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), describing it as an extension of what he characterised as Rahul Gandhi's “politics of anarchy”. He claimed that civil society groups concerned about the country's future and constitutional institutions would reject such politics. CJP has separately been campaigning over electoral-roll issues and has demanded action against Gyanesh Kumar, making the organisation another part of the wider political debate surrounding the Election Commission.
The latest comments add another layer to the growing BJP-Congress confrontation over the Election Commission. While Opposition parties have intensified protests and raised questions about electoral processes, BJP leaders have accused the Congress of undermining constitutional institutions. The two sides have continued to sharply differ over the allegations and the conduct of the Election Commission.
With the Opposition continuing its campaign and BJP stepping up its counterattack, the Election Commission row is emerging as a major political flashpoint in Delhi.
