New Delhi: The INDIA bloc is holding a crucial meeting in New Delhi amid the ongoing controversy surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Opposition parties are expected to discuss their future strategy over allegations and concerns raised regarding voter list changes.
The meeting comes at a time when opposition parties have intensified their criticism of the Election Commission’s handling of the SIR process. Several parties have raised concerns over alleged voter deletions, while the Election Commission has maintained that electoral roll revisions are carried out according to legal procedures.
According to reports, the opposition meeting will discuss issues related to the Election Commission, the SIR process and a possible joint response on the matter. The demand for action against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar is also among the issues being raised by some opposition leaders.
The Congress and several opposition parties have alleged irregularities in the voter revision process and have sought greater transparency. The Election Commission, however, has rejected allegations of bias and said that the process follows established rules.
The meeting is also taking place amid differences within the INDIA bloc. The DMK has decided not to attend the meeting, citing its current political differences with Congress. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has also decided to skip the session, though it has expressed support on some issues related to the opposition’s stand against the CEC.
Leaders attending the meeting are likely to discuss possible joint programmes and political steps over the SIR controversy. The gathering is being seen as an attempt by opposition parties to coordinate their approach on electoral roll-related concerns.
