New Delhi: Congress leader Sonia Gandhi’s upcoming memoir ‘Belonging: A Journey of Love’ has entered a fresh phase, with reports suggesting that the Indian edition may have a different cover design from the international release.
The Indian version is likely to feature a saree-clad photograph of Sonia Gandhi, reportedly clicked by her husband and former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
While the international edition reportedly carries a close-up portrait of Sonia Gandhi, the India edition may showcase a more personal image reflecting her connection with the country.
The photograph taken by Rajiv Gandhi is expected to add an emotional element to the memoir, which traces Sonia Gandhi’s journey from Italy to becoming one of India’s most prominent political figures.
The development comes amid controversy over the book’s publication in India. Sonia Gandhi’s publishing agreement with Penguin Random House India (PRHI) reportedly ended after disagreements over editorial suggestions.
Sonia Gandhi reportedly maintained that the memoir represents her personal account and that she would not allow changes that could alter the essence of her story.
Penguin Random House India, however, clarified that it had not withdrawn from publishing the book and said editorial discussions and fact-checking are a normal part of the publishing process.
‘Belonging: A Journey of Love’ explores Sonia Gandhi’s childhood in Italy, her relationship with Rajiv Gandhi during their Cambridge years, and her transition into Indian public life.
The book also reportedly discusses major personal tragedies, including the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi.
Reports suggest that HarperCollins may publish and distribute the Indian edition, although the publisher has not officially confirmed the development.
The memoir is scheduled for global release on November 10 under Alfred A. Knopf.
