Sultanpur: Ahead of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly Election 2027, political activity around the Sultanpur Assembly seat has started gaining momentum. With a history spanning nearly seven decades, the seat has witnessed changing political equations between the Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Samajwadi Party (SP) and other parties.
The biggest talking point ahead of the next election is the close contest witnessed in 2022, when BJP’s Vinod Singh defeated SP’s Anoop Sanda by just 1,009 votes. While no major party has announced its official candidate for 2027 yet, discussions over possible contenders have already started.
The 2022 Sultanpur Assembly election was one of the closest contests in the recent political history of the constituency.
BJP candidate Vinod Singh secured 92,715 votes, while SP’s Anoop Sanda received 91,706 votes. The final victory margin stood at just 1,009 votes.
BSP candidate Dr Devi Sahay Mishra finished third with 22,521 votes.
The close margin highlighted how every vote and local political equation could play a crucial role in Sultanpur’s electoral battle.
The electoral history of Sultanpur Assembly seat dates back to the first Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections held in 1951.
During the early years, Congress maintained a strong presence in the constituency. Kunwar Krishna won the seat on a Congress ticket in 1951 and 1957, while Abdul Sami secured victory for Congress in 1962.
However, the political landscape changed in 1967 when Bharatiya Jana Sangh’s Ram Pyare Shukla defeated Congress candidate Abdul Sami, marking the rise of non-Congress politics in the region.
Ram Pyare Shukla continued his electoral success in 1969, while Jitendra Kumar became MLA from the Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1974.
After the Emergency period, the 1977 election brought victory for the Janata Party, with Jitendra Kumar Agrawal winning the seat.
Congress returned to power in the constituency during the 1980s, with Moeed Ahmed winning elections in 1980, 1985 and 1989.
By the 1990s, BJP and Samajwadi Party emerged as the major political players in Sultanpur.
The 1993 Assembly election marked an important moment for SP in Sultanpur when Barqat Ali Khan defeated BJP’s Ram Pyare Shukla.
Later, Anoop Sanda strengthened SP’s position in the constituency by winning consecutive elections in 2007 and 2012.
His back-to-back victories made him one of the most recognised political faces of Sultanpur Assembly politics.
BJP made a comeback in Sultanpur in the 2017 Assembly elections, with Surya Bhan Singh winning the seat.
In 2022, BJP fielded Vinod Singh, who faced a direct contest against SP’s Anoop Sanda. The election turned into a neck-and-neck battle, with BJP winning by a narrow margin.
Ahead of 2027, BJP will aim to retain the seat, while SP will look to regain its political ground.
The name of sitting MLA Vinod Kumar Singh remains among the prominent possibilities for BJP in 2027.
Apart from him, names like Nagar Palika chairman Praveen Kumar Agrawal and BJP leader Rupesh Singh are also being discussed as potential contenders.
However, the final decision will depend on the party’s strategy, local feedback and official candidate selection.
For the Samajwadi Party, Anoop Sanda remains a significant name after his narrow defeat in the 2022 election.
The party will have to decide whether to continue with the experienced face or introduce a new candidate for the 2027 battle.
